Inspiring the Next Generation: SibiNet and Kier Join Forces for Open Doors 2025
As part of Build UK’s Open Doors 2025 initiative, SibiNet proudly partnered with Kier Construction to showcase real career pathways in the construction industry and to inspire a new generation of diverse, local talent.
Held at the Midland Met Learning Campus site in Smethwick, the event offered young people a rare, behind-the-scenes look at one of the region’s most ambitious education construction projects.
Real Role Models, Real Opportunities
The day began with a motivating talk from Ashish Patel, CSR Coordinator at Kier, who introduced Kier’s inclusive approach to recruitment and workforce development. He gave attendees insight into the wide range of opportunities available from apprenticeships and graduate schemes to SWAP programmes and work experience placements.
This was followed by an unforgettable site tour led by Philip Pugh, senior Site manager at Kier, whose inspiring story captured everyone’s attention. From earning £35 a week as a labourer to becoming a Project Manager at Kier, his journey proved that with determination and support, meaningful career progression is possible.
“Hearing Phil’s journey made the industry feel real and accessible. It showed the young people what’s possible with the right mindset and the right opportunities.”
— Muhammad Sibi, Director, SibiNet
Turning Insight into Action
Beyond inspiration, the event gave young participants practical guidance on how to access roles at Kier, whether through apprenticeships, placements, or career transition programmes.
The feedback from the attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Many expressed newfound confidence and clarity about their next steps, and several have already begun exploring how to apply for roles within the industry.
“The feedback has been fantastic. It’s clear that experiences like this have the power to shift perceptions and ignite ambition, especially for young people from ethnic minority backgrounds.”
— Muhammad Sibi, Director, SibiNet
Looking Ahead
At SibiNet, our mission is to break barriers and open doors literally and figuratively. This collaboration with Kier is a great example of how purposeful partnerships can help underrepresented talent not just enter the construction industry but thrive in it.
We’re excited to continue working with Kier and others to ensure the future of construction is diverse, inclusive, and full of opportunity.
